Superman Textile Sensor

I created a touchpad sensor from conductive thread, fabric, Lilypad, Processing, and Arduino. Sensor data collected through Arduino was mapped to visual coordinates of Superman flying over a city landscape in Processing. Sensor touchpad prototypes and final product were quickly generated using a knitting machine. The laser cut superman logo was for aesthetics.

Below is a slide show of my design and testing process.

The final sensor did have some problems which may be due to imperfections in the fabrication such as discontinuity in the knitting; uneven contact with conductive fabric; non-smooth felt fabric surface of Superman logo; and varying degrees of stretchiness throughout the knit. However, using the final sensor, I was able to build more accurate code in Arduino and Processing for detecting the x and y coordinates.
